In the games lore, Makers are servitor constructs placed onto planets to stimulate life to grow in different ways to you and me as players they are essentially very similar to creature dens, shooting one with it’s spawned creatures still alive will cause them all to aggro you so be prepared to run or fight!
Makers, like dens are a good source of loot caches, the more difficult (signalled by name colour, yellow being the easiest and pink the hardest) the maker the better the quality of loot caches it will drop (common, uncommon, rare, epic and legendary)

You will often see yellow named makers openly on planets and even in space, killing these doesn’t require you to do anything special just clear out the creatures around it and then kill it, it will give you a few common or uncommon loot caches.
HOWEVER! if you want the higher quality loot boxes you are going to need to to learn how to find, hack and fight the larger, harder to beat makers.
Equipment
The only piece of equipment you need is a bioscanner, the basic one you can buy for 2000 klaatus from the tool vendors on either Haven or the Space Station will do.
Skills

You need to learn at least Xenobiology and Maker Scanning both from the Xenobiology skill tree, they require 750xp and 750 Klaatus combined (300xp and 300 klaatus xenobiology and 450xp and 450 klaatus maker scanning) so equip your bioscanner run up to each new animal you see and scan them with ‘left click’ this is how you get xenobiology xp. You can how many species of are on a planet by pressing ‘U’ and going to creatures but you will only get xp for scanning each species once per planet, however seeing the species on another planet and scanning it will give xp.
There are more skills for maker scanning should you wish to get them called maker scan I, II and III but all they do is increase your scan range and are not required to find makers.
Once you have maker scanning unlocked equip it to your bioscanner by pressing ‘I’, right clicking on your bioscanner and changing loadout while in a safe area, you can choose to equip it to either the ‘Q’ or ‘E’ button but that is up to your personal preference
Finding Makers
Once you have yourself setup with your bioscanner and maker scanning skill it’s time to go hunting. The easiest wait to start maker hunting is to find packs of creatures before you scan, if you find creatures you are guaranteed that either a den or a maker is spawning them.
With creatures spotted you are going to want to place a camp, thin their numbers out a bit to make life a bit easier and then switch to your bioscanner and press ‘Q’ or ‘E’ depending on which you assign your maker scanning to. You will see a blue dome pulse out a way from you with a red marker somewhere in the pulse, follow that red marker and keep pulsing that is going to lead you to the maker.

Once you get close enough to the maker pressing your scan button will unstealth the maker, but be warned this may appear right next to you! You will notice the unstealth maker will be shielded unlike the yellow named makers you see freely around the world without scanning.
Dropping the shield and fighting the Maker

In order to lower the shield you need to ‘hack’ the maker, in order to do this you need to find small round balls the periodically uncloak and the cloak again around the maker, the easiest way to find them is to follow the green data stream lines coming off the maker to the individual ball, once there wait for it to uncloak and press ‘F’ to start the hack, you must stay near the ball, moving away from it will interrupt the hack, when the hack is complete the data stream will be completely purple and you will see the word HACKED! in spatial chat. Repeat this on all balls that have appeared although the most I have seen on one maker currently is 3. Having a friend to help with this will make it much easier as the first person to shoot the maker gets aggro on it, once the first ball is hacked aggro will swap to whoever did the hack and so on until the shield drops.
With the shield down all that’s left to do is kill the maker, the maker will continue to throw high damage AOE’s so keep your shield up if you have one and keep dodging while shooting the ball at the top of the maker.
And that’s it the maker will die and drop 2-3 rare, epic or even legendary loot caches for you to pick up, everyone that has shot it will get rewards.
