Stars Reach can be a vast universe to tackle in pre-alpha below are a mixture of 10 things I have learned while playing and wish I had known before I started my adventure in this wonderful vibrant universe.

  1. Official Discord Voice Chat

The official Stars Reach discord is a great place to find other players, leave feedback and chat to the developers who are very transparent and engaging when talking to players. During playtests you will often find several players, moderators and even developers hanging out in voice chat on the official discord server and all are willing to help and answer any questions you may have. If voice chat isn’t your thing there are plenty of text channels on the discord for players help, feedback, bug reports and general chat so make sure you get involved.

2. Explore Haven

You have made it through the hallway and landed on your first planet, Welcome to Haven, Stars Reach version of a tutorial. On Haven you are going to find a few short quests to teach you how a few core items and systems work in Stars Reach, these can be done relatively quickly and soon you will be seeing the portal to go to TPL Starbase, However I would recommend you don’t rush through the portal just yet, take your time look around Haven, gather all the pathfinder points, harvest the different kind of mushrooms, practice combat on wildlife and maximise your Haven experience while gathering XP in professions which you will be able to use to unlock skills, abilities and crafting recipes at skill kiosks on TPL Starbase.

3. Getting Money

Once you reach TPL Starbase you are going to want to get some money or Klaatus as it is known in Stars Reach. To do this you are going to want to head to the mission terminals on TPL Starbase select a planet you wish to run missions on and pick up some missions, these will typically award you between 100 and 600 klaatus per mission completion. Money is going to let you buy any starter tools you do not already have which in some cases will open up more missions.

4. Experimenting with Tools

Once you have some starter tools I would recommend heading to a planet and experimenting with them. There’s a wide rang of tools in Stars Reach that do some really weird and wonderful things from turning rock to soil, sand to glass and water to ice, the best way to learn exactly what they do and how they impact the world is to head to a planet and play around with them.

5. Upgrading Tools

Once you have figured out how the starter tools work its probably best to get better versions of them, while starter tools are sufficient for starting out crafted versions of them tend to be far superior, use less power and in the weapons case do more damage. To get upgraded versions of the starter tools you can either spend crafting xp on skills to unlock the recipes and craft them yourself, visit player vendors on planets to see if people are selling them or if you hop on discord voice and ask you may just find someone who will make you some for free. The first item I personally would get an upgraded version of is the weapon, it makes a huge difference.

6. Craft and Use Food

While running around planets running missions you will quickly find you are getting quite a lot of meat from combat missions. I would strongly recommend turning this into both Meat Kabobs and Health Boosters as soon as you can and then using them. Meat Kabobs will give you bonus health while Health Boosters will greatly increase your health regen if you get hit in combat.

7. Report Bugs, Leave Feedback, Give Suggestions

Stars Reach is still in pre-alpha and we are very much still in a phase where we can help shape the game. The more details we can give the developers while testing the game the quicker progress can be made. You can report bugs and leave suggestions in game by pressing the “F11” key.

You can also leave more detailed bug reports, suggestions and feedbacks as well as including screenshots and videos in the relevant discord channels on the official discord server.

8. In Game Knowledge Base

Stars Reach includes a rather handy in game help tool that gives a basic explanation of how most things in Stars Reach work. To access this press the “F1” key and browse through the many available sections for a basic explanation on how things work.

9. Find a Home and Contribute

When you find a planet you like you are probably going to want to put down roots. To do this you are going to want to head to the govbot terminal located right next to the portal where you load into the planet and select become resident. Becoming a resident of a planet has a number of perks including standing for mayor, voting for mayor and contributing to level the planet up.

Levelling the planet up unlocks perks for all residents by letting the mayor place communal amenities like banks and crafting terminals for all to use. To level up a planet several things are required, you can see the requirements by visiting the govbot but they are currently generally klaatus, metal, gems and gasses. Donating grants you citizen points which you can use to unlock engrams (15% bonus xp for 15 minutes) and skill chits (removes the klaatus cost of skills but you still require the xp), you can donate at the govbot.

Finally when you have became a citizen you are probably going to want to build your own homestead to do this you need to buy a homesteader item from TPL Starbase then right click it in your inventory once you have found an area to place it on the planet of your choice.

10. Gravity Mesh

Our final tip for beginners is to get the gravity mesh as soon as possible once again you can do this by unlocking the ability to craft it in the crafting skill tree, buying one from another players vendor or by asking a friendly player to craft you one.

The gravity mesh really changes how the games plays allowing you to fly around the map by holding spacebar while this consumes stamina currently it makes the world much easier traverse and allows you to avoid fall damage if you are quick enough to use it when falling and scale mountains without the need to climb the full way.

This concludes our current tips for new players, fell free to let us know in the comments which tips you would of added.
